HANDCUFF and BATON - Re-certification

D.E.F.E.N.S.E CONTROL TACTICS TRAINING 

Pursuant to the Private Security & Investigative Services Act (PSISA), S.O. 2005, all licenced Security Guards or Private Investigators who have been authorized by their company to carry and use Handcuffs and/or a Baton must successfully complete qualified training. This should include annual recurrency training on all relevant procedures, standards and techniques.

Further, as part of Company Policy, Employers have an additional responsibility under the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) to ensure their employees receive regular re-certification training and up-to-date education and instruction on Legislation, health and safety and industry Best Practices.

This should include the completion of both a written Theory test and Practical Skills Demonstration (PSD) to ensure compliance and proficiency.

Course Overview

The only one-of-its-kind in Canada, Canadian Security's D.E.F.E.N.S.E Use of Force program is specifically designed for security and private law enforcement personnel and is taught by current and/or former police DCT/Use of Force subject matter experts. Providing students with firsthand knowledge and practical experience to ensure their actions are lawful.

This one-day course is designed for students who have successfully completed the INITIAL two-day DEFENSE Control Tactics course within the previous 12 months with Canadian Security Training (CANSEC). As part of CANSEC's DCT training program, the mandatory DCT RECERT ensures that students maintain both academic and practical skills proficiency standards. All students must successfully complete a written DEFENSE Control Tactics/Use of Force exam and the Practical Skills Demonstration (PSD), which includes the completion of mandatory J.D.A.S (Judgement and Decision-Making Scenarios) simulation training.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is designed as part of Advanced training for Security Guards and both Public and Private law enforcement personnel.  This is a mandatory requirement for any licenced personnel carrying and using handcuffs and/or a baton.

Prerequisites

This course is open to applicants who currently hold a valid Ontario Security Guard Licence and have successfully completed Canadian Security Training's INITIAL two-day DEFENSE Control Tactics (DCT) course within the previous 12 months. Due to the strict standards of the DCT program, no students will be given exemptions based on DCT/UOF training programs completed at other training organizations. All applicants must complete a Student Application Form (available online) and full payment is required at the time of Registration. 

Equipment Required

There is no training equipment required for this course. Student training manuals and all required reading materials are included in the cost of the course.  All participants will be required to complete a mandatory PAR-Q physical activities questionnaire.  Dress code is business casual for the classroom portion of the training and proper fitness attire will be required for the physical activities component.

Recurrency and Recertification

All certificates issued are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Included as part of the DCT program are complimentary academic tracking and a re-currency training reminder service.
