Preparing Security for the Future
By Wayne Kendall
Security managers in today's dynamic business environment are expected to play a variety of roles with little appreciation. The responsibilities that we are expected to maintain in support of our business' success and skills we must upkeep in order to respond to the challenges of asset protection and continued operation are daunting.
Every day it becomes more apparent how large the need for certified and approved training facilities and courses beyond just the introductory level is. The stark reality, however, is that while some courses are provided by companies, colleges and institutions, there are few cross-specialty or security management courses, or even published standards. These would provide necessary information and would ensure a continuous flow of fully-trained security professionals for years to come. If we want to meet the challenges of our changing times, we must make these needs a priority.
It's not difficult to see that the responsibilities and liabilities of the average security manager have come a long way since those of the fatherly night watchman. Traditionally, security focused on a response (and blame) model with less time spent on preparation and prevention. However, that is no longer adequate. We must address the needs to increase professionalism and regulation in our industry if we are going to meet the challenges that society has thrust upon us. A coordinated approach and benchmarks for minimum standards for security practitioners that are regulated and universally recognized must be established.
And we must be prepared to attend these courses, upgrade our skills and hire fellow graduates.
At CST, we are committed to this goal and will do our part to achieve the development and implementation of these standards, education and regulatory requirements from coast to coast across every discipline within the industry. We will take the lead on this with your support. In subsequent issues, we will share our vision and "battle plan" as well as provide you with tips and resources.
Today's security professionals have an excellent opportunity to influence the direction of our industry for years to come. Let's make the most of it.
